G-P15 is uncommon in Europe today but dominates ancient DNA from Europe's earliest farming settlements. Otzi, the 5,300-year-old iceman found in the Alps, belonged to it. The gap between then and now is a record of how thoroughly later migrations reshaped Europe's paternal lines.
What it traces
G sits on the family tree of the Y chromosome, passed from father to son. Following it back means following your father, his father, and so on back, one unbroken thread. It says nothing about the thousands of other ancestors you had at the same depth, which is the single most common misunderstanding about haplogroups.

What is haplogroup G?

It first appeared about 25,000 to 30,000 years ago, in The Caucasus and Anatolia. That is a coalescence estimate with a wide margin, not a date.
How do I find out if G is my haplogroup?

Does haplogroup G tell me about my health?
No. Haplogroups describe one line of descent. They are not used to assess health risk, and anyone who tells you otherwise is overreaching.
