The story of this line
J-M267 dominates paternal lines across the Arabian peninsula and is frequent throughout the Near East and North Africa. Its main expansion appears to track the spread of pastoralism, and it is also the haplogroup of the Cohen modal haplotype studied in Jewish populations.
What it traces
J1 sits on the family tree of the Y chromosome, passed from father to son. Following it back means following your father, his father, and so on back, one unbroken thread. It says nothing about the thousands of other ancestors you had at the same depth, which is the single most common misunderstanding about haplogroups.
