The story of this line
J-M172 is associated with the spread of farming out of the northern Fertile Crescent. It is common in Anatolia, the Caucasus, Greece, Italy and the Levant, and is found across Central and South Asia, following the trade and migration routes of the ancient world.
What it traces
J2 sits on the family tree of the Y chromosome, passed from father to son. Following it back means following your father, his father, and so on back, one unbroken thread. It says nothing about the thousands of other ancestors you had at the same depth, which is the single most common misunderstanding about haplogroups.
